DIY Tartan

Over the past month every top blogger I've been following has raved about the tartan mini, and if you haven't seen this school-girl-esque trend then where have you been. Viktor & Rolf's Spring/Summer 2014 line, had good girl gone bad as the motto, where tartans reached mid thigh to knee and blazers were left without right lapels.

Since everyone has posted their most favourite designs of this trend, I felt the need to create a DIY for this cute tartan mini.

Materials:
Sewing machine

Step 1:
-Cut your fabric into two sections of 1 meter in width
-The length should be from your waist to thigh (unless you want shorter or longer)

Step 2:
-Sew, with right sides of both fabrics together a 1.25 cm/ 1/2" seam from the waist to the hem
-Repeat on the other side
-Press open and iron flat
**You can finish the seams by zigzagging the seam allowances from the waist to the hem, although I did not

Step 3:
-Press the hem up 1/4"
-Press the hem up another 1/2" and edgestitch the hem (edgestitch = sew 1/8" next to edge of folded up hem, aka VERY CLOSE) -I use the edge of the presser foot to determine
-Iron flat

Step 4:
The waistband is the trickiest part..
-With right sides together still, fold & press the waist down 1/4" then fold over ANOTHER 1" (depending on the width of your waistband it may be more), edgestitch leaving a gap open to slide in the elastic (about 2 inches
-Grab your chopstick and tape the elastic band around the end of it
-Slide the chopstick through one end of the gap and gather the waistband until it comes out the other side
-Sew the gap close using an edgestich, making sure not to catch the elastic

Tadaaaa, hope your skirt turns out great and email me (apav4c@gmail.com) any pics if you decide to make one or hashtag #deckinplaid on insta

I'll post a picture of the finished product later for you to see
